Some individuals excel during the interview process and find it an awesome challenge. Others think of it as a nightmare and fail to do justice to themselves. A well-prepared applicant with questions in hand is a key to success. Remember follow the lead of the interviewer and only ask questions when instructed to do so. Below you’ll find a list of potential questions to ask an employer during an interview.

  • What is your nurse/patient ratio?
  • How is scheduling conducted on your unit?
  • Do you have 8/10/12 hour shifts?

  • How often are performance evaluations conducted?

Now you have conducted your exploration of the facility, yourself, and have your questions in hand? Don’t forget professional dress. Always be prepared. Bring at least 2-3 copies of your resume and reference list. Be certain to include a cover letter with your resume. Always be about 15 minutes early for the interview. This will enable you to compose yourself and gather your thoughts.

Behind the door…. The time has come and all your preparation is about to pay off.

Take a deep breath. Offer a handshake and don’t sit down until you are instructed to do so. Always maintain eye contact and answer the questions honestly. Don’t forget to ask the questions you have prepared toward the end of the interview. Always thank the employer for their time and send a follow up post-interview thank you letter.

I hope the above information will be a useful key to opening the door to a successful future. I challenge each of you to continue to be dedicated, compassionate, and committed to excellence in all you do!
